That Game Rules!
I’m your host Scuba Steve and thanks for checking out my mediocre podcast!
Every week here we pick a nice ol’ retro video game.
We’re gonna travel back in time, we’ll talk all the movies, shows and toys that surround that game.
Then we’ll get into the game - go over the vitals, box art, characters, levels, music, check out some comments and reviews and a whole bunch of other stuff.
At the end we’ll give this game some awards, slap a ranking on this thing and determine once and for all if that game rules!
Thanks again for listening!

Grab those batteries and slap 'em in that big grey brick, cuz we're talking about Super Mario Land. The first portable plumber adventure and a whole new way to game on the go. We're going to Sarasaland to fight new enemies, rescue a new princess, and see how Mario's new game holds up against his own legacy on another round of That Game Rules!
We timewarp back to 1989 for big hair, big shoulder pads, and a big breakdown of the TV Guide lineup on our Saturday morning cartoons. Plus, we find out the misconceptions that can happen when you package liquid candy in toothpaste tubes.
As always, I can't keep the thoughts together and talk about a whole bunch of other nonsense too...

The year is 21XX. Nintendo was giving all the franchises a shiny upgrade thanks to the SNES. Everything was coming up Super. Meanwhile, Capcom went a different route... In dashes Mega Man X. New moves, new story, new villians and bosses, and a German cartoon theme song that slaps harder than a potential Slap Man. Let's see if X and Zero can hold the title of "That Game Rules!".
Meanwhile, in 19XX, we check out the movie line up and also a little HBO after dark... I break down how terrible the Tiger Electronics handhelds were, cartoons and shows from the 90's, and discuss the fallout of video game violence with the formation of the ESRB. Won't somebody please just think of the children??? Also, Petunia was the name of Pete's tattoo in The Adventures of Pete and Pete, so there.
As always, I can't keep the thoughts together and talk about a whole bunch of other nonsense too...

It's another Sega vs. Nintendo throwdown today. In a world full of Marios and Sonics, it takes a certain charm to stand out. Well, launch the nearest cow because we're talking about Earthworm Jim. This can of worms has everything: Evil the Cat, Princess what's her name, a level called Buttville, and our own space cowboy here to save the day. Let's get groovy and see how this 90's gross humor stands up on That Game Rules!
Was 1994 the best year in cinema history and was it because of Street Fighter: The Movie? Was it really Nerf or Nothin? If you couldn't out pizza the Hutt, could you Avoid the Noid? We check out a lot of 1994 goodness, including a ride on the Reading Rainbow to the local book fair! No buying any posters or Troll pencil toppers though...

What is the airspeed velocity of an unladen Nintendo controller? Find out today on an inevitable episode in any self-respecting video game podcast: Battletoads. It's a game....and here's an episode about it.
Timewarp to 1991...talk about Fruit by the Foot.... Speed Bikes.... Turbo Tunnel... Where am I...?
As always, I can't keep the thoughts straight and talk about a whole bunch of other nonsense too...

More Mario madness again this week, with one of my favorite games ever: Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars. A collab by Nintendo and Square in an attempt to bring RPGs to the western audience. It's time to dig deep into the Mushroom Kingdom, introduce fun characters we'll never see again, and celebrate this swan song of the SNES before the N64 came to lay the hammer down. Grab some Yoshi Cookies and some ice cold KeroKeroCola, let's jam out with Toadofsky and waste some time on That Game Rules!
Stopping by 1996, we take a look at the state of movie theaters from the 90s. From movies to video rentals, arcades and snacks, those old theaters had it all. It was Morphin Time with the Power Rangers, Chia Pets had every kid gardening way before Animal Crossing, and we talk about the 1996 video game that never was, Star Fox 2. It was probably Slippy's fault.
As always, I can't keep the thoughts straight and talk about a whole bunch of other nonsense too...

Time for some dragon tales today, featuring our favorite purple 90s dragon with an attitude: Spyro the Dragon. At a time when Nintendo was fighting to keep up with the adult oriented games of the PlayStation, Sony was taking a swing at the plumber himself trying to develop a game to appeal to the younger generation. In flies Spyro in all his sheep roasting, gnorc chirping glory. Ready to collect that treasure and save a bunch of elderly, senile old dragons? Let's fire it up on another retro episode of That Game Rules!
On our trip to the past, we look at Sony's State of Play back in 1998, starting with the hottest new tech: The Discman. Electronic skip protection and Bass Boost?? Shut up and take my money. Plus, we discuss more movies and cartoons from the 90s and take a look at the landscape of gaming back then with the Playstation, N64, and Dreamcast. Of course, you weren't really rad if you weren't rocking Britney or NSYNC on those Hit Clips...
As always, I can't keep the thoughts straight and talk about a whole bunch of other nonsense too...

It’s dangerous to go alone, take this podcast! We break down everything about Legend of Zelda for the NES on this dungeon crawling episode. History and development, music and sound, and exploration with tight controls all add up to one of the best video games ever created. We talk about the memories that made us gamers, playing Zelda for the first time, and trying to figure out where we land in the current Zelda Timeline to determine if That Game Rules! Excuuuuuuuse me, princess! (It does.)
On our way to 1986, we get lost in our own Labyrinth of a Timewarp, possibly distracted by David Bowie’s huge bulge. The Legend of Zelda board game was definitely a thing. Also, movies, cartoons, games, and the ultimate question from our childhoods: How many licks does it take to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop?
As always, I can't keep the thoughts straight and talk about a whole treasure chest of other nonsense too...

Is Perfect Dark the perfect game? We join Joanna and Elvis this week for a spiritual sequel to the iconic game Goldeneye. Aliens, conspiracies, clones, A.I., and loads of cheese make this Nintendo and Rare collab another successful mission. Better weapons, more maps, and a story with more twists than a Christopher Nolan movie... Joanna had some big spy shoes to fill, so let’s load up that ammo, grab a shield, and head to DataDyne HQ to take down some baddies and see if That Game Rules!
Aliens were so hot in the late 90s... This game took tons of references from some awesome sci-fi pop culture. We talk about X-Files, Independence Day, Men in Black, and for some reason I go off on local carnivals. Even Y2K couldn’t slow down this Timewarp...
As always, I can't keep the thoughts straight and talk about a whole banana bunch of other nonsense too...

Streets of Rage 2 is at the top of a lot of “Best of Sega” lists. Some may argue it’s the best beat-em-up game of the entire 16-bit genre. But is them fighting words? Let’s punch and kick our way through another episode, while trying to answer the ultimate question: Can Sega really do what Nintendon’t? Grab that lead pipe, watch out for those spikey shoulder pads, and get ready to jam out to some amazing techno beats as we clean up the streets and try to determine if That Game Rules!
Lazers, Blazers, and all sorts of azers. We head to the 90s to talk about big hair and big action. Did you watch movies with your parents that were inappropriate for your age? We had some great violent movies back then with stars like Arnie, Stallone, and Chuck Norris. Also, the American Gladiators we’re beating people up on the small screen as well. Add in some Sega CD talk and it’s a radical, 90s good time.
As always, I can't keep the thoughts straight and talk about a whole banana bunch of other nonsense too...
